John McClane was sitting on his couch enjoying a beer when his cell phone started vibrating on the coffee table. He stretched out a hand and caught it before it hit the floor. With an annoyed sigh, he flipped it open.
“McClane.”
“I know that you are probably the last person that I should call about this, but I have a blind date that some of the guys set me up on and I don’t know what to wear.” The voice of Matthew Farrell sounded rather rushed, almost as if he was afraid that John would hang up on him.
“What do you usually wear on dates?”
“I’m a computer geek, McClane. I don’t go on dates.”
John sighed and ran a hand over his face. “Where are you going?”
“We’re meeting at a place called Armand’s.”
“I’ve been there. They have good food,” John replied. It was a fairly homey restaurant. No matter when you went there, the staff was friendly and the room was non-threatening. It wasn’t like the trendy places where you felt like people were studying you while you ate. “The guys really set you up with a blind date?”
John was a tad concerned about this. Matt had been doing consultant work with the police department since after the Fire Sale. Most of the guys seemed to like him enough, but there were quite a few that seemed determined to make his time there a living hell. John didn’t trust this blind date.
“Yeah, I thought it was weird too, but they said they knew someone who they thought I would really like. So, what should I wear?”
“Do you have a pair of jeans that are clean and don’t have hole in them?”
“Yes.”
“How about a button down shirt?”
“I’ve got one that’s a dark green.”
“Is it clean?”
“Yes.”
“Then wear that with the jeans. You’ll look great.”
“Thanks John, I really appreciate this,” Matt replied.
John felt his heart skip when Matt called him by his first name. He loved the way that it sounded coming form Matt’s lips. “Not a problem, kid. I hope that you have a good time.”
John hung up his phone and stared at the phone in his hand. His heart was racing just from talking to the younger man. He had it bad.
John wasn’t sure when he had fallen for the computer geek. Matt was the first person since Holly to sneak past his defenses. John had been so happy to see him the first day that he had walked into the station that he had actually smiled. Most of his coworkers had never seen him smile before. John didn’t trust the date that the others had set up for Matt. Sighing, he tossed back the rest of his beer and grabbed his coat.
It was time to cheek on Matt.

John spotted Matt the moment that he entered the restaurant. He was sitting alone at a table, toying with his water glass. It looked like he had been stood up, but John noticed the four men in a booth near the back who were laughing. It looked like there was never a date in the first place. They were far enough back that Matt wouldn’t be able to hear them. He probably didn’t even know that they were there.
John memorized every face. He was not happy with them, but they were about to get a rather big shock. Tugging the sleeves of his shirt down, John stepped into the main dining room and headed to Matt’s table.
“Is this seat taken?”
“John?” Matt was staring at him in shock.
John sat with a smile. “Date going well I see.”
“I think I was stood up.” Matt gave a dry laugh and looked down at the table. He blinked quickly to hide the fact that there were tears in his eyes, but John caught them. He knew that the kid had a lot of insecurities and what the no-longer-laughing men at the table had done was obviously playing hell with all of them.
“That just means that you get to have dinner with me. Works out for both of us.” John reached across the table and rested his fingers on the sleeve of the dark green shirt. “This looks great on you.”
“Thanks.” Matt looked up and the smile was back on his face. “You look nice. Did you change and come here to cheek up on me?”
“Maybe.” John shrugged and unfolded his menu. “I had to make sure that you were okay. I didn’t like the idea of you being stood up on a blind date.”
“Which is exactly what happened, so thank you.”
“To be honest, I don’t like the idea of you dating.”
Matt didn’t get a chance to answer because that was when the waitress showed up. John took the unexpected silence to order for both of them. He ate at Armand’s enough to know what was good. John pulled the menu of away from Matt and handed it to the waitress. She smiled at both of them and walked off to take the order to the kitchen.
“You just ordered for both of us.”
“Yes, I did.”
“And why don’t you like the idea of me dating?”
“I want to be the one dating you,” John replied. He picked up his water glass and took a sip while Matt gaped at him.
“You want to be the one dating me?”
“Yes.”
“Well it’s about damn time that you got around to telling me that,” Matt stated. There was a broad smile on his face. “I was starting to think that you would never ask me out.”
“Sorry it took me so long.” John reached across the table and grasped Matt’s hand. He smiled when the hacker’s elegant fingers wrapped around his. “I was worried that you wouldn’t want an old guy like me.”
“There is no way that I wouldn’t want you.” Matt squeezed his hand. “So, is this our first date?”
“Yes. I’ll even pay for dinner.”
“I guess that means I’ll have to put out,” Matt replied. He tossed John a flirtatious smile.
John had to swallow a moan as he hardened in his pants. They hadn’t even gotten their meals yet and all John wanted to do was toss Matt up on the table and fuck him senseless. John gave the hand he was holding a small tug and pulled Matt across the table. When he was in range, John placed a kiss to his lips.
The soft kiss was everything that a first kiss should be. It was full of promise and passion. It sent tingles down John’s spine. He couldn’t wait to get Matt naked in his bed. As he pulled away from the kiss, he spotted the surprised looks on the faces of the four men who had been laughing at Matt.
“Wow,” Matt stated. He licked his lips as he moved back to his side of the table.
“Wow indeed,” John repeated. He gave Matt’s hand one more squeeze then pulled his hand away. He had to shift in his seat to get more comfortable. One kiss and he was already straining against the fly of his jeans.
Dinner was going to be interesting, but he couldn’t wait for dessert.
The End
